The environment and cultural issues of the largest passenger cruise through the Arctic’s Northwest Passage and the tax-exposure of world-class athletes are two of the issues Culhane Meadows partners discussed at the 2016 International Bar Association annual conference in Washington, D.C. September 18-23. Robert J. Kiggins, Linda V. Priebe and David Jacoby participated at the event attended by more than 4,000 lawyers from around the world.
Mr. Kiggins, of Culhane Meadow’s New York office, took part in a program called Branding in Sports. His talk addressed U.S. Tax Law Considerations for Non-U.S. Tax Resident International Athletes. Mr. Kiggins practices in the firm’s Corporate & General Business and Taxation section and is active in the International Business Structuring Association based in London, England.
Ms. Priebe was panelist in a program called Tourism Development in environmentally sensitive areas such as national parks and World Heritage sites. She discussed the historic 1,700 person Crystal Serenity cruise of the Arctic’s NW Passage and the International Maritime Organization’s Polar Code, set to take effect on January 1, 2017. In addition to Arctic compliance issues, her practice is focused on U.S. EU Data Privacy/Security and Social Media compliance, and Arctic stakeholder engagement and government relations. Ms. Priebe is based in Washington DC and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Polar Research and Policy Initiative (PRPI), an international think tank headquartered in London.
Mr. Jacoby is Chair of IBA’s Leisure Industries Section and presided at a Section Open Meeting at the conference. Among the Section’s projects is the preparation of a Global Guide to Foreign Hotel Investment. Mr. Jacoby’s practice is concentrated in litigation and intellectual property. He is also an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law and is in Culhane Meadow’s New York office.
