Culhane Meadows, PLLC is pleased to announce that Linda Priebe in our DC office has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the Polar Research and Policy Initiative in the UK. The Polar Research and Policy Initiative (PRPI) is an international, independent, non- partisan think-tank founded by Dr. Dwayne Ryan Menezes and Mr. Christophe Milhères in September 2015. Based in London, PRPI facilitates crucial, sustained, high-level and high-impact dialogue between scholars, experts, explorers, policymakers, indigenous peoples, civil society, private sector firms and other stakeholders about the most important issues facing the Polar Regions. These issues range from the causes and consequences of climate change and the protection of marine and coastal environments to the socio-economic empowerment of indigenous peoples and the management of shipping routes and natural resources.
The changes in the Polar Regions present both challenges and opportunities. The reduction of Arctic sea ice has increased interest in the northern sea routes that could significantly reduce the time to ship goods across the globe. Technology improvements have also caused oil and gas and mining companies to increasingly look to the Arctic, which is thought to hold 30% of the world’s undiscovered gas, 13% of its undiscovered oil and substantial reserves of metals and rare earths. Countries are also competing for greater influence in Antarctica, interested in the strategic opportunities it presents. Developments in the shipping, fisheries, energy, mining, tourism and ICT sectors also provide trade and investment opportunities for businesses and investors in the far north. The UK and major Commonwealth member states also represent key markets for Arctic and Nordic businesses and investments.
Linda Priebe joined Culhane Meadows directly from her role as Deputy General Counsel and Agency Ethics Official in the White House Office of Drug Policy and Office of the Counsel to the President (1999-2103). Prior to White House Drug Policy, Linda served as Acting Legal Director at the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law in Washington DC; Assistant Utah Attorney General for Indian Affairs; Member of the Utah State Solid and Hazardous Waste Control Board; and attorney in private practice representing Indian Tribes in environmental and natural resources litigation. She is also certified in European Data Privacy Law and serves on the Board and Executive Committee of the Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC.
Personally, Linda was raised in a Norwegian-speaking home in Seattle and was fortunate to attend seventh grade in Anchorage, Alaska. The beauty of Alaska’s remote lands and her fascination with native peoples in combination with her Norwegian heritage has been the driving inspiration for her Arctic work.
