The SEC may be taking a different approach to enforcement under Chairman Paul Atkins—but that doesn’t mean CFOs can take their foot off the compliance pedal.
That was one of the key takeaways when CM Law Partner Mike Piazza joined Foley & Lardner Partner Pat Daugherty and CFO Dive Senior Reporter Jim Tyson at CFO Live 2026: Future of Finance to discuss the current SEC enforcement landscape.
Piazza, a former SEC regional trial counsel, described the agency’s approach under Atkins as a return to the basics: more traditional, focused enforcement rather than an end to enforcement altogether. In fact, Piazza said reports of the “death of enforcement” are “well overstated.”
So what should CFOs do with that?
Don’t chase every regulatory shift. Build a compliance program that can withstand them.
As Piazza put it, rather than getting “whiplash” from changes in the regulatory environment, companies should have a comprehensive, solid compliance program that works in the current environment—and protects against whatever comes next.
The discussion also touched on the SEC’s focus on executive compensation disclosures and whether enforcement resources are being spent on matters that are truly material to investors.
For CFOs navigating a regulatory environment that continues to evolve, the message is refreshingly straightforward:
- Know the rules;
- Keep your compliance house in order; and
- Focus on the fundamentals.
